CNHA Executive Officers - 2010-2011

President - Barbara Thackray

Barbara M. Thackray was born in Manchester, England and played field hockey, lacrosse, and cricket for her high school.  Between clerical jobs, she spent summer vacations cycling around England with a friend.  She then buried her head in physics laboratories and math books at Oxford University for 3 years, finding time to play lacrosse on the University women's team and learning how to punt on the river.

After graduation, she taught high school science until emigrating to the U. S. with her husband.  Living in the Philadelphia suburbs with three children finally led to returning to teach Physics for 17 years at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr,  PA.

She retired to live in the 100 year old family vacation home in Chincoteague in 2004 with an orange tabby cat named Garfield.  In Chincoteague, she grows vegetables, tends flower beds and lawn, volunteers at the library and for the board of the new YMCA.  She prefers to go to local shops, church, and the wildlife refuge by bicycle.  She has two children in California, and a married daughter and 2 small grandchildren in the D. C. area.

Vice-President - John Eliot

John Eliot earned both a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in journalism from Northwestern University.  After three years as a reporter for the Cincinnati Post and Times-Star in 1974, he became a staff writer for National Geographic magazine and moved to Washington, D.C.  After many trips to Chincoteague, he retired from National Geographic in 2006.  John now lives full-time on the south end of the island.  Salt marsh and waterfowl have always had a powerful attraction for him.  In addition to serving as Secretary on the CNHA Board of Directors, John also puts in many hours as a volunteer on the refuge.

Secretary - Carole Marz

Carole "Cookie" Marz moved to Chincoteague in 1998, and shortly thereafter she and her husband Bob, became volunteers on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.  Avid devotees of the Assateague Lighthouse, Carole served as Secretary of the Lighthouse Committee during the 4 years her husband was Chairman of that same committee.  Currently she is a member of the newly formed CNHA Assateague Lighthouse Committee.

Both Carole and Bob were born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, NY; they started raising their family of three sons on Long Island, and moved to Northeast Pennsylvania in 1980.  From there the move was made to Chincoteague where many camping trips were enjoyed previously.  Leisure time activities include camping, reading, and some needlework.

Prior work experience included secretarial positions in a Lutheran Church, an insurance office and a Red Cross Chapter.  Upon moving to Chincoteague, she worked in food service at the Chincoteague Elementary School for over 6 years.

Carole is committed to working toward keeping the refuge a beautiful place for families to come, learn about, and enjoy the beach, wildlife, and (of course) the lighthouse.
